Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)
GMO is short for “genetically modified organisms.” As of December 2018, the term bioengineered food is now used to describe GMOs after the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard. It is the process that incorporates desirable traits from nature into crops resulting in plants that can be healthier, more nutritious, and better for the environment.
There are many benefits of this agricultural technology, including helping farmers reduce their environmental footprint by decreasing the amounts of water and pesticides they use, and making food more affordable to help alleviate hunger and malnutrition around the world.
Bioengineered foods and the technology to create them have been around for over 25 years. Today it is estimated that more than 80% of the foods we eat in the United States contain ingredients that have been genetically modified.
Since some of the ingredients we use are GMO, all of our packaging has the food disclosure contains a bioengineered food ingredient.

Highly Refined Coconut Oil (HRCO)
Following FDA guidelines, Goetze’s Candy has transitioned away from the use of a partially hydrogenated oil ingredient and currently uses a highly refined coconut oil ingredient. Highly Refined Coconut Oil (HRCO) is NOT designated a tree nut by the FDA and it is exempt from the allergen labeling regulations mandated by Section 203 of the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004. Lear more about what it means for ingredients to be highly refined, you can visit SnackSafely.com.
Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)
The RSPO has developed a set of environmental and social criteria which companies must comply with in order to produce Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO). When they are properly applied, these criteria can help to minimize the negative impact of palm oil cultivation on the environment and communities in palm oil-producing regions.
The RSPO has more than 4,000 members worldwide, including Goetze's Candy Company, who represent all links along the palm oil supply chain. They have committed to produce, source, and/or use sustainable palm oil certified by the RSPO. To learn more about the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, visit their website. |
Allergens
Goetze's products, Caramel Creams® and Cow Tales®, contain Wheat, Milk, and Soy.
Nut Free Facility
Caramel Creams® and Cow Tales® are a peanut-free and tree nut-free candy. Some of our products are re-packaged in a different facility. Always review the Allergen Information on your package prior to consumption.
Modified Whey
Whey is the material bi-product of cheese production. In other words, it's the liquid that is left over after milk has been curdled and strained. Modified whey has a higher percentage of protein than regular whey. Modified whey is used in food items because its properties enhance flavors, viscosity, and texture, while contributing additional protein.
High Fructose Corn Syrup
High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is corn sugar. High fructose corn syrup has become one of the most commonly added sweeteners in the food industry. Goetze's Candy uses high fructose corn syrup because it helps to ensure that the caramel products maintain a soft, chewy texture during manufacturing and throughout its shelf life.
