The Scouts had an exciting time at the Baltimore Grand Prix!
It would have been hard for anyone to enter the race area without bumping into a few Scouts, they were everywhere! Small groups were dispersed all throughout the inside of the track selling bags of Caramel Creams® and Cow Tales® (in addition to ear plugs and event programs). Profits made from these donated Goetze’s Candy treats went directly to the Troops, Packs and Crews selling them to go towards educational trips, equipment, etc.
A number of Scouts participated in the opening ceremonies each day, whether carrying individual flags or working together to carry and present the large American flag. It was an honor that the Scouts took very seriously and an honor for us to witness and work with such respectable young men and women.
The Scouts also hosted the inaugural Petite Grand Prix, located in the Family Fun Zone at the event. They had 4 tracks set up, all with official timers. Scouts and kids just passing by could participate. Many of the Scouts brought their Pinewood Derby cars in to use, but they had tables set up with car parts so that anyone could assemble, decorate and participate! At the end of it all, they had 6 winners, a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for Scouts and the same for general kids. These winners were presented prizes at the end of the Indy Car race on Sunday, on the very same podium as the Indy winners! 2nd and 3rd place winners received medals and both of the 1st place winners received trophies that were identical to the real race trophies! How cool is that!? Each of the top 3 also received a bag filled with Goetze’s goodies!
